If you want to interface iPad/iPod you can try the redpark serial adapter

http://www.redpark.com/c2ttl.html

We use it to control a quadcopter with an iPod touch 4G.

Note that this cable is NOT compatible with the latest iPhone5/iPad/iPod
connector.
